As I am getting ready to do some spoke adjustments on the Speedwell wheels, I dug out my spoke key – actually, keys – I have a few! My favourite one just to look at is this “King Dick” brand from the English toolmaker. I really like the style of the punched numerals in thousandths of an inch, and the rough image of the dog.
I have no idea how old it is …
My favourite key to use use is this single size Wearwell, that actually looks like a key and it feels “right” in my hand. There was a (link) > Wearwell Cycle Co. in England, and I assume this key was made by them :
The hex one with it is a cyclo brand, I think. Cyclo made some interesting cycling products as well as tools, and I have one of their bar-end shifters here, just waiting for the right restoration :
Also here are some cyclo alloy wing nuts and one other from my collection :
I always liked the shape of these wing nuts …
And a couple of no-name keys :
I’m not into collecting these keys though I imagine someone somewhere would have a huge collection – there are many other designs, some to be found on sites like ebay.
